Smart Promo Idea (And For A Good Cause Too): The Summer Book Club

Just a short post today. A group of top-selling indie writers have come up with a rather clever idea that I wanted to highlight (which also happens to help a worthy cause).

The Summer Book Club contains titles from top indie authors J Carson Black, Saffina Desforges, Mark Edwards & Louise Voss, Sibel Hodge, Victorine Lieske, HP Mallory, Scott Nicholson, and Cheryl Shireman.

You can read Mark Edwards’ blog post about the background the idea here. They have set up a Facebook Page to promote the book club, and tonight they will be holding a chat with Mark Edwards himself.

This is a golden opportunity to pick the brains of someone who has spent the last month at the top of the UK charts (a particularly impressive achievement considering he only published his first book in February). The chat takes place at 7pm GMT (11am Pacific).

They came up with an innovative way to promote the initiative, releasing a sampler called The Summer Book Club, which contains a chapter from each of the partipating books. On top of that, it contains exclusive content from each of the authorssuch as short stories and articles.

The book costs 99c and all the authors’ royalties from the sale of that book will be donated to help victims of the recent Missouri tornado.

Unfortunately, I will be out this evening and I will miss the Facebook chat, but please feel free to get Mark Edwards to spill all his marketing secrets and then report back.

Enjoy the weekend!

EDIT: While the chat is over, you can read the archived conversation (with plenty of marketing tips from Mark Edwards) at the above link.

Born in Ireland, he now lives in a little fishing village in Portugal, although this hasn’t increased the time he spends outside. He writes fiction under another name, has helped thousands of authors build a readership, and has created marketing campaigns for some of the biggest self-publishers on the planet. Friend to all dogs.

  1. How strange,
It must be something in the atmosphere. My mother has Alzheimer’s Disease and I had an idea for to support Alzheimer’s Charities this morning. See my blog if you want to find out more.

  2. Thanks, David. We are very proud of our anthology and think people will like sampling our books before they buy. Every one of us has also added an original short story or article to the book.

The chat is a great chance to talk to an indie author, Mark Edwards, who made it to the top two spots on the Kindle Top 100 Bestseller list in the UK – all Kindle, all Books – with CATCH YOUR DEATH (#1) and KILLING CUPID (#2). A remarkable feat. For all indie writers, whether they are super-successful, just starting out, midlist writers, or indie publishers, this is a chat that could be truly eye-opening!

    1. Hey JCB,

By the time I got home the chat had ended, but I was able to scroll back and read the whole conversation. Very interesting.

P.S. For anyone that missed it, the chat is just one big long Facebook post on the page, and it will stay up there for a while, so you can still check it out (link above in the post).

  3. I LOVE being a part of the indie writer community. And I think this sort of project is indicative of the way indie writers support and encourage one another. Since I published my first novel, Life is But a Dream, six months ago, this is the one thing that has just amazed me – the outpouring of support from other writers. I love being part of the writing community and am honored (and humbled) to be part of this project. For those of you who cannot afford to buy one more single ebook (and that would be ME – my “to be read” list is ridiculous) – you can download the anthology for free on Smashwords

    1. Cheryl,

I love this idea too, and I am happy to continue plugging it. I’m looking forward to seeing who the next live chat will be with. I just grabbed my free copy. Looking forward to reading it.
